In August, the UK government announced that the wearing of face coverings would be mandatory in shops in addition to all public transport. This follows World Health Organisation advice since June recommending "wearing masks in public where social distancing is not possible to help stop the spread of coronavirus". The global body said information showed they could provide "a barrier for potentially infectious droplets". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52945210
These are FFP2-specification respirator masks specified to filter out at least 95% of particulates. Unlike surgical masks (the commonly used disposable ones) which are one-time-use only, FFP2 respirators fit better, filter finer particles and can be re-used a limited number of times after being removed, as long as they have not been used during aerosol-generating procedures and are not contaminated. Data suggests limiting to five uses per mask to ensure an adequate safety margin.
Until the end of May, the public were discouraged from buying FFP2 masks so as not to divert essential supplies from frontline health workers. Supplies are now more freely available from China where the vast majority of the World's surgical and respiratory mask supplies originate. They are supplied to us by a known and trusted distributor. A comprehensive technical information sheet on mask specifications is available on request.
