This incredible image shows the late Martin Finnegan
flying at Tandragee in 2008.
World-renowned road racing photographer Stephen Davison
recounts the story behind the awe-inspiring picture in his best-selling book
Hard Roads:
‘A few minutes after I had taken this photograph of
Martin Finnegan in action during practice for the 2008 Tandragee 100, he rang
me. He had finished the practice session and stepped off his bike back at the
paddock. Even though he had been racing over Cooley Hill Jump at 100mph Martin
had spotted me in the hedge and he wanted to know if I had got the picture of
him – sure hadn’t he looked over at my camera and everything! I told him that I
had and that he had scared the living daylights out of me too. We laughed and
said that we would meet up the following day.’
Tragically, Finnegan lost his life in a racing accident
the next day. This dramatic image is as much a celebration of his life as it is
a celebration of the speed, passion and drama of our sport.
