An unpredictable season opened with success for Casey Stoner and Ducati at the first round in Qatar, when the young Australian was the surprise winner of a fascinating duel with Valentino Rossi.

Despite winning the next round in Jerez, Spain, the Italian was powerless to stop Stoner's charge to the title - the 21-year-old becoming the second youngest World Champion in the sport's history with three rounds to spare.
