This is the one in which Steve Hislop gave all-comers a warning of what he had in mind by setting a blistering practice lap record of 121.99 mph.

Perched aboard the works RVF750 Honda-4 he said he was determined to break the lap record from a standing start!

Favourite Dave Leach (750 Yamaha) found himself left at the start with a broken clutch cable, Brian Morrison (750 Honda) proved himself to be a very fast rider and Carl Fogarty (750 Honda) joined an exclusive 'sub-19 minute club' with a lap of 119.52 mph.
